Day 7 (Sunday, June 12, 2016)

It was still light after midnight when I finally got to sleep last night and was already light before 4 AM-we didn’t get up at 4 but sort of woke up to double-check the time and then went back to sleep until right before 7.

The campground was actually quite nice.  I apparently can’t interpret signs either as I suffered through a cold shower.  That is quite fine when it is warm but not when it is 50 degrees!  This one cost to use as well so maybe that is the norm.  The sign had specific instructions on starting on the “Start” and making sure you turned it completely after each quarter (4 quarter minimum!).  It said to make sure it was On and it was ready to go.  Well, I guess “On” didn’t mean the water was on but the button was “clicked” over a bit to where it said “On.”  The On button was right by the Start button so I thought I was good to go.  Andrew had an almost too hot shower and I was cold all day from my misinterpretation!

It is a little weird not having cell service.  I have a deal with Verizon that allows us access to any tower available in Canada for only $2 per day.  We have had three different towers that we have used, but, in reality, there really isn’t any reception.  If there aren’t people, I guess there isn’t a need.  I wonder what the highway workers use?  Surely they as well as the police have to have something?  So our blog is always a bit late.  We are trying to get this one caught up on the right night as when we leave tomorrow we may not have any reliable cell service or WiFi for a few days.  We are heading north to Prudhoe Bay!

Right now we are in North Pole, Alaska.  We really wanted to stop at Delta Junction to bike a bit but it was raining.  We lucked out in that it wasn’t raining when we put up our tent although right now it is drizzling.   The sun sets this evening at 12:34 tomorrow morning and rises at 3:03 in the morning.  We also lost Sirius satellite radio in our truck once we headed north.

The drive to finish out Canada was lovely as usual.  Andrew’s new quote:  The scale of everything is immense!  It is so hard to wrap your head around it.  It was mostly trees, so many recovering from fires though most not recent fires as you can see new growth in varying degrees.  Then we’d see rivers and HUGE lakes and swampy areas and then back to trees.  Love it!

We didn’t see as much wildlife today, except to let a pair of moose cross in front of us.  We apparently missed a mother brown bear and her two cubs.  I know exactly where they were as I did see someone stopped on the shoulder with her camera out the window but there was also a semi barreling down the road at that time, so I just focused on my driving.  The last part of the Alaska Highway is always in a state of disrepair/repair in the summer as freezing does it in each winter.  So a large chunk of our day was spent swerving around potholes and low spots while it drizzled.  We did have to follow a Pilot car and we made sure we didn’t pass anyone today!  We had a nice chat with a family returning home to Anchorage from a vacation in Arizona while we were waiting for the Pilot car to lead us.  Our poor truck was brown when we crossed over into Alaska!  Even with the continuing rain, it is still brown.  We will need to get her washed but part of our journey tomorrow also involves a gravel road, so why.

We drove 1,422 miles of the Alaskan Highway and are currently 4,400 miles from home.  We didn’t have any trouble crossing over back into the USA.  It does give those standing guard a double take since we don’t have permanent plates on our truck yet.  But we showed him the Bill of Sale and were good to go and wished a great rest of our journey.  We took pictures at the border; there was another couple doing what we are doing-traveling the Alaska highway without their kids.  Just like us, they’d gone once before with their kids and are now doing it without them.

Why don’t people blink timely?  I nearly took out an RV today.  I was passing one, and the one in front of it decided to turn left!  It started blinking as it was turning!  I hate when people do that!!  The one I was passing also decided to turn left!  So I am in the left lane just ahead of an RV now blinking left (I can see him now blinking in my side view) and an RV in front of me turning left!  It all turned out well but if they would have blinked earlier it would have kept my stress levels down just a tad.  Yikes.  There is just so little traffic out on this highway that you tend to just go.  You have tons of time to pass and you can just go.
